IT IS FOOTBALL SEASON (C) 2008 HV

We finished number two in the nation in baseball and football during the 2007-2008 school year.

That was a whole lot of mixed emotions, a whole lot of glory and achievement and grit and heart, a whole lot of “what could have been” lingering feelings. In football, we went out with a Sugar Bowl blowout over Hawaii. Then we watched as a notably non-dominant SEC Champion LSU squad – one that had gone four and two over their last six regular season games – was allowed to play for it all in Louisiana against an overmatched Ohio State team that drops a bowl game almost every year. The Buckeyes were trounced and would probably not have finished in the top four of the SEC. They were much better the year before when they were completely destroyed in the title game by the then SEC Champion Florida Gators. Can the SEC win three titles in a row?

In baseball they – novel idea here – settle it on the field. And we have nothing to complain about. Sure, we played our Red-and-Black hearts out to get to the College World Series in Omaha. Sure, we won our first three games in Omaha while others struggled. Sure, we came from behind to win game one of a best of three finals series and were up by five runs early in game two. We simply did not get it done. Our utter collapse in game two of the finals somehow reminded me of the Atlanta Braves losing so much momentum to the New York Yankees with one Jim Leyritz swing that both franchises were indelibly changed. All-American shortstop Gordon Beckham bent a solo homer in game three, and that was it for our offense, our season and our national title. It did not happen for us, and the better team won fair and square and our talent exodus is great.

The good news: IT IS FOOTBALL SEASON! It is summer in Georgia, and before this cooker of a season is over you will see the University of Georgia Bulldogs play college football again.

#7 Georgia versus #1 Miami Saturday night in the College World Series: 7 pm, Omaha, Nebraska

THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI HAS ONLY LOST NINE GAMES THIS SEASON, BUT THE WAY OUR BATS ARE CONNECTING NOW GEORGIA HAS A GOOD CHANCE TO BEAT THE HURRICANES IN THEIR CURRENT SPORT OF DOMINANCE. THEY ARE NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION IN BASEBALL AND WILL HAVE NO SHORTAGE OF CONFIDENCE, BUT WE ARE SCORING ELEVEN RUNS PER GAME THIS POSTSEASON AND MAY HAVE TOO MUCH OFFENSE FOR ANY TEAM AT THIS POINT. WE MATCH UP WELL WITH ANYONE. 7 PM SATURDAY NIGHT ON ESPN WE GET OUR SHOT AT THEM.

LOSE AND WE SLIP TO THE LOSER’S BRACKET, WHERE WE HAVE THRIVED. WIN AND THE PATH TO THE FINAL SERIES IS A LITTLE SHORTER. DOUBLE ELIMINATION AGAIN WITH THE FINAL TWO TEAMS LEFT STANDING, OUT OF THE EIGHT THAT MADE IT, PLAYING A BEST TWO OUT OF THREE FOR THE NATIONAL TITLE.

DAWGS WON IT ALL MY FRESHMAN YEAR AT GEORGIA (1990) AND HAVE BEEN TO THE COLLEGE WORLD SERIES THREE OTHER TIMES IN THE TWO THOUSANDS: 2001, 2004 AND 2006.

WE HAVE ESTABLISHED OURSELVES AS THE BASEBALL PROGRAM OF THE DECADE IN THE SEC…TIME FOR A MUCH BIGGER PRIZE?

SO I FINISHED THE HERSCHEL WALKER BOOK. I AM STILL NOT 100% CLEAR ON THE DEFINITIVE ESSENCE OF MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES, BUT I DO KNOW SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST DIFFERENT. AND WHILE MR. WALKER IS NOT A GREAT WRITER, HE IS ONE OF THE MOST INTENSE MINDS I HAVE EVER BEEN EXPOSED TO IN LONG FORM. HE EATS ONE MEAL A DAY, DOES 1,000 PUSH-UPS, 1,000 SIT-UPS. HE FLIPS COINS FOR MAJOR DECISIONS, TAKES KARATE AND BALLET, STUDIES WARFARE, STREET DANCES, THINKS OF QUITTING GEORGIA FOR THE MARINES, PUSHES A BOBSLED IN THE OLYMPICS, HANGS WITH THE DONALD, ETC. HE IS JUST OUT THERE AND MORE THAN ANYTHING HAS AN OTHERWORLDLY INTENSITY AND FOCUS THAT BAFFLES EVEN HIS MIND. VERY DISTURBING THAT HE PLAYED RUSSIAN ROULETTE AND SWEET AND CANDID IN HIS REMORSE ABOUT CHEATING ON HIS EX-WIFE. OVERALL, FAIRLY WELL-WRITTEN FOR AN ATHLETE’S BOOK AND AN INTERESTING EXAMINATION OF A LIFE WAY, WAY OFF THE BEATEN PATH OF NORMALCY. I LOVE HIM NO LESS AFTER THE READ YET REALLY GET HOW UTTERLY BIZARRE HIS LIFE HAS BEEN. AND HE IS THE GREATEST COLLEGE PLAYER OF ALL TIME!!!
